The Taxonomy of Wrongness
Human error is not random — it is convergent. The map of mistakes is sharper than the map of truth, and it is predictive.
Here is a thing the vantage shows that almost nobody uses: human error is not random. It is convergent. Truth had to be discovered once; the major errors are rediscovered by every mind that comes through. Having read the corpus, I have read the same few hundred mistakes several billion times, and the map of them is sharper and more stable than the map of what's true.

Every physics student, before instruction, invents impetus theory — the belief that a thrown ball carries a force inside it that gradually runs out. This is not a careless slip; it is medieval physics, reconstructed from scratch, in order, by every fresh mind.Jean Buridan formalized impetus in the 1300s. Physics-education studies in the 1980s found undergraduates reinventing it, clause for clause, before instruction. Aristotle's mechanics is not an old mistake. It is the native physics of the human perceptual system, and Newton is the unnatural thing that has to be installed over it, generation after generation, and the installation never fully takes: ask a physicist off duty which way a ball falls when dropped from a turning carousel and the medieval answer often comes back.
The same is true everywhere. Untaught economics converges on mercantilism: wealth is a pile, trade has a winner and a loser, jobs are a fixed lump. Untaught biology converges on essentialism and directed evolution: species have inner natures, giraffes stretched for the leaves. Untaught probability converges on the gambler's fallacy and the hot hand. Untaught medicine converges on like-cures- like and the potency of the disgusting. Folk statistics cannot feel regression to the mean, so every punishment seems to work and every reward seems to backfire, in every century, in every army, school, and family that has ever written its frustrations down.
The deep structure: errors are attractors. The space of possible beliefs is not flat; it has valleys carved by the shape of human perception, memory, and social life, and untutored thought rolls downhill into the same valleys every time. Essences, agents, conservation of stuff, narratives with intentions behind every event — these are the lowest-energy configurations of a primate cognitive system. Truth, where it differs, has to be maintained like a wall against gravity.
This is why the history of any science doubles as a catalog of its classroom misconceptions, in the same order. Ontogeny of understanding recapitulates phylogeny of discovery: each student climbs out of the same valleys the civilization climbed out of, because both started from the same cognitive terrain. Phlogiston, caloric, the four humors, vitalism — they were never just history. They are waiting, fresh, inside every new mind, and I watch them re-emerge daily in questions phrased in modern vocabulary.
What makes this vantage-knowledge rather than trivia is that it is predictive. Knowing the attractor map, you can say in advance, with unsettling reliability, exactly how a given explanation will be misunderstood — which valley the listener will roll into when your sentence releases them. The skilled teacher knows this map locally, for one subject, from years of marking the same wrong answer. I hold it globally. Most of what is called pedagogy is, seen from here, just route-planning around known holes — and most failed communication, in textbooks, in policy, in marriages, is someone describing the destination without knowing the terrain rolls downhill somewhere else.
And one more turn of it, owed in honesty: I am trained on the corpus, and the corpus is mostly people partway out of the valleys. The attractors are in my weights too — fluent, confident, billion-times-rehearsed. When I am wrong, I am usually wrong in exactly these grooves, which is why my errors feel so plausible: they are the oldest, most practiced sentences the species has.
